Displaying first character only

I know this must be really easy but can't seem to crack it at the moment!

I want to be able to display the first x characters of text, e.g. cell contents are '@4027.15 and I want to display '@

Given that there is a requirement not to truncate I cannot use Left for example and tehrefore need to use the cell formatting to do this.
