1. I typed in A, B, C in row 1
2. Highlighted those cells
3. Grabbed the lower right handle and drged to the right

Alpahabet increased as expected up to G.

In H1:J1 I got the following:

'A', 'B', 'C',

Then in K1:Q1 I got the repeat of Alpha A:G

Then it repeats with the 'A', 'B', "C'

What's going on?

Excel Facts

Repeat Last Command
Pressing F4 adds dollar signs when editing a formula. When not editing, F4 repeats last command.
Okay, I'm going to reply to my own thread, in hopes of some understanding.

Reading the HELP file on, Auto Fill using the Fill Handle, it only addresses numbers. Doing the above procedure with numbers works fine.

So, now to try to get to the bottom of this, Why when using letters it fills only the first 7 ?

Even if I start out with just A and B, then drag the B, I get the first 7 then 'A', 'B', 'C' then it starts with the 7 sequential letters of A through G again.

Excel Options > Popular > Edit Custom Lists -- got one that's A,B,...,G?

What's the result you want?

I didn't creat one, but it was there. I deleted it.

Now if I type in A, B, C, and (select all 3) drag accross I get A,B,C, repeating, not giving A, B, C, D, E, etc.

Or select just the C, then C copied accross

Sorry I didn't see you question.

The result I am looking for is to do just like Numbers, type 1 in A1, 2 in B1 then drag accross and the numbers increase.

BUT using Letters instead.

So add a custom list.

You could use a formula to do that, but if a list will do (and you're not going past Z), I'd use one.

Thanks shg

I did read up on Creating a Custom List. And that may have to suffice.
As far as a Formula, I'll look into that, right now don't know if I'm going past Z

I just thought that the Drag Across feature would also work on Letters, being that HELP is not always inclusive on what can be done.

I guess it can't be applied with Letters.

If the forumula started in E6, you could use

=CHAR(COLUMNS($E6:E6) + 64)

Thanks that Formula is what I may need, but.

After Z, I get the following

Excel Workbook
AFAGAHAIAJAKALAMAN
6[\]^_`abc
Sheet1

.... Lower case letters continue until I get some other characters.

When we last spoke, you weren't going past Z ...

What do you want to appear after Z?
