Here's another driving me crazy. When I have a spreadsheet already open and I go to open a second one... it will open on top of the first one. I can't find the option to make it open in a new window.

Excel Facts

Excel Can Read to You
Customize Quick Access Toolbar. From All Commands, add Speak Cells or Speak Cells on Enter to QAT. Select cells. Press Speak Cells.
You could launch excel again, then open the file from the new excel, but you'll notice a file in use message which will allow you to open your personal.xls file as read-only for the second instance of excel.

If you have workbooks open in one instance of excel, you can toggle through them by using ctrl+tab, or you could tile them by using the menu options Window>Arrange...> then choose how you want the workbooks displayed.

In my opinion it is not good practice to open a new version of excel for new spreadsheet yo need to open. You'll soon eat up system resources. The other suggestion of window arrange works, but if excel and the current window are fully maximised any new spreadsheet launched should take up the current window.

Check if the excel window is fully maximisee

I'm not wanting to open the SAME spreadsheet in a different window. I'm talking about opening a completely different file.

On my computer at home if I'm in a spreadsheet and I open a different file it opens in a new window.

At work it will simply open the new file on top of what I already had open.

Welcome to the Board!

Goto Tools-->Options-->View-->Windows in Taskbar.

Hope that helps,
