Dropdown Ribbon control: Referencing its value in VBA code

So I have created a dropdown ribbon control using XML where, after selection, code runs via the OnAction event - so no problem there. The issue remains, is there a way to directly obtain the value of the Ribbon DropDown control in other code?

i.e. If the ribbon dropdown value is this, then do that.....

A workaround I have is to save the value in a global variable which then I can reference but that seems a tad unsophisticated. I wonder if I can reference the Ribbon DropDown control directly to get its value.
