Entering numeric values not preceded by = or +

I have a spreadsheet in which I often enter one number in a cell, then later return to that cell, edit it, and want to add another number to the one already there.
Can I set up Excel to NOT require that a = or + sign precede an existing number and have Excel still recognize it as a formula? (Example: I want to enter 5+6 rather than =5+6.)

Excel Facts

Control Word Wrap
Press Alt+Enter to move to a new row in a cell. Lets you control where the words wrap.
Welcome to the board...

Tools - Options - Transition
Check "Transition Formula Entry"

Note, this may have other unforseen side effects...

Would you be trying to add the same number to multiple cells?

You can type say 6 in any blank cell
copy that cell
Now highlight the cell(s) you want to add 6 to
Right Click - Paste Special - Values - Add

That will add 6 to all numbers you highlighted.
That may be a better method..

Thank you! Checking the transition box completely solved my problem (I am a user of Lotus 123 since version 1A around 1983).
