Excel file link error

I have a formula in excel which references another file(s). I have my options set to ask me if I want to enable the update to other files. When I enable the update, certain links return “0”, when there should in fact be information returned. However, if I physically open the source file, the link returns the correct value. Also, when I go into “Edit Link” and update the source, it says “OK”. The “Evaluate Formula” function returns #REF before opening the file, and the correct info after opening the file. Any ideas what my problem is?

Here is a generic example of the formula I'm using
=SUM(FOLDER\[FILE.XLS]RANGE)+SUM(FOLDER\[FILE.XLS]RANGE)
Most of the file links don't even have a mathmatical equation, it is simply =FOLDER\[FILE.XLS]CELL
To my knowledge this is not one of the formula types that normally require the source file to be open to return the correct value. In fact, I have other files that have this same basic formula to similar source files, and only certain files are causing this problem.

Excel Facts

Which lookup functions find a value equal or greater than the lookup value?
MATCH uses -1 to find larger value (lookup table must be sorted ZA). XLOOKUP uses 1 to find values greater and does not need to be sorted.
