Excel files opening in new instance

Any Excel files I open is opened in a new instance of excel and not the existing one. Using Windows 7 and Excel 2007, I've tried varios changes to the registry but still have the same issue.
Any ides how I can set to open Excel files from desktop, email attachments etc in the existing Excel instance?
