Is it at all possible to have excel running in the background and just have the VBA userforms visible?

Excel Facts

Which Excel functions can ignore hidden rows?
The SUBTOTAL and AGGREGATE functions ignore hidden rows. AGGREGATE can also exclude error cells and more.
Yes:
Code:
Sub hide_app()
Application.Visible = False
UserForm1.Show
End Sub

Don't forget to have a mechanism in place to set the application.visible property back to true, when you hide or unload the last userform.

If you do not want to hide application then try:
Code:
Private Sub UserForm_Initialize()
With Application
    .WindowState = xlMinimized
    .Width = Me.Width
    .Height = Me.Height
    .Left = Me.Left
    .Top = Me.Top
End With
End Sub
This will position Excel app behind the userform.
