Excel not playing cricket

For some reason when i enter a very simple Cell reference formula =Sheet1!C6
Excel is displaying the formula rather than the result. To confuse matters more, i could try a slightly different, but same function, formula in the cell above and it works fine. Can anyone please explain why this is happening?

Is your cell formated as text?

I have tried formatting as text, number and as 'general' and retyping the formula after each cell format change. I have tried this in various combinations in the cell I am typing the formula and the cell I am referencing.

Tools - Options - View, make sure Formulas is unchecked

What are the contents of Sheet1!C6 ?

Check for spaces " =Sheet1!C6"

At the moment it is 545460 but that figure is variable dependant on user input (If that makes sense)

There are no spaces in the formula.
