My company recently installed Windows 7 and Office 2010. Every time I try to open a excel file, via a link on our Intranet it asks for credentials.

I ruled out IE, firewall, and the document. I narrowed it down to something in Excel except i can't find it. Its like a security setting.

I was able to open the file when I had Office XP installed but as soon as i installed Office 2010 it won't work.

any ideas

Excel Facts

Using Function Arguments with nested formulas
If writing INDEX in Func. Arguments, type MATCH(. Use the mouse to click inside MATCH in the formula bar. Dialog switches to MATCH.
This is from Word 2010 problem but I'm guessing you're having the same problem...

Try this.

Open Excel 2010

Click on File > Options > Trust Center

Click the Trust Center Settings... button; the Trust Center window opens.

Click on File Block Settings in the left pane.

In the File Block Settings right pane, uncheck (deselect) all check boxes and select radio button Open selected file types in Protected View.

Click the OK button; the Trust Center window closes.

Click the OK button; the Excel Option window closes.

You should now be able to open previous version.

IF YOU MAKE CHANGES TO OLDER VERSIONS, don't forget to Save As that version -

- or do what I did and CHANGE the Office 2010 default 'save' settings to Office 2003 versions. This will keep your files compatible for other users who have not / will not buy into the Microsoft changes.

didn't work. I have a excel and word file doing the same thing so I tried both. They keep asking me to logon but they won't accept my ID's. If I keep hitting cancel the work document will open but not the excel.

I wouldn't recommend using system registry but I'm out of ideas;;

Make sure you use the lightest scan (not deep scan or w/e..)

Here are some of the answers when sought on the internet
There is no typical reason why you shouldn't be able open files created from the previous versions of the program. The advice you were given to load a compatibility pack does not apply to you. The compatibility pack is for people who have an old version of Office and need to open files from the new version. You, however, have stated that you have the new version, but that you can't open older versions.

What is the error message you are getting? The problem may not be your office software. It could be something wrong with the web site you're visiting. But you need to post the error message so that we can tell more of what's going on.

Download and install the Office File Converter Pack from here and then try to open the file in Excel 2010.

Thanks a lot for the suggestions. I reloaded another computer from scratch so if its a registry error it's really annoying. I'll keep looking.
