Pressing Ctrl+* (asterisk) will select the "current region" - all contiguous cells in all directions.

From my experience (& I'm still very much a beginner), I suggest you start with recording macros and seeing how the code structure looks. From there you can then tweak and play around to see what happens.

Also these forums are excellent and you'll find any questions answered quickly by some top guys.

Agree with Jon on this one, but Hiker95 has also compiled a list of training sites, books, videos and forums.
Some of these may be of assistance. If your looking for beginner stuff, the very last entry has simple one and two liners that can be built up to a bigger macro.
