Expand/collapse buttons not working consistently with DAX hierarchy

I created a DAX hierarchy with a depth of 5 levels. The expand collapse buttons on my pivot table behave inconsistently. Often times a + button will appear even if there is nothing beneath it to drill down to. Sometimes if I fiddle with the expand collapse menu and expand it out to level 5 and collapse it to a lower level, it works as anticipated and + buttons appear only where there is data underneath to drill down to. Is there a non VBA approach to reset the buttons?

I'm not clear if you are saying you think it is a bug (it should be displaying a value but it doesn't) or if you are getting blanks (as designed). Dax only handles symmetric hierarchies out of the box. There is a very good article about how to handle parent child hierarchies here
