Hi,
Please forgive me if I'm not doing this correctly.😬

Months ago I came across an old thread that solved my original problem . Love it.
Orginal post by pramodpandit @: https://www.mrexcel.com/board/members/pramodpandit123.460240/

I used the formula =SUBSTITUTE(A1,".","'-")&"""" to represent 11.6 as 11'6". per the thread

As a construction worker the above formula is super awesome to use for quick data input for field meetings. I find myself needing to convert to decimals at times. Is there a way to take that easy representation of 11'6" and turn into a decimal into column C for when I'm referencing topographic points on a survey. It would be 1 divided into 12 = .08333. <---This representing 1"

I would greatly appreciate some help.

Excel Facts

Square and cube roots
The =SQRT(25) is a square root. For a cube root, use =125^(1/3). For a fourth root, use =625^(1/4).
Is it as simple as 11.6 divided by 12?

if so, in column C =sum(A1/12)

If you had 11.1 in a cell is that 10 inches or 1 inch?

No because that would mean 11.6 is already in a inch form. 11.6 in decimal form on a survey means 11'7 1/4"
I just use a decimal to separate the inches, formula then converts to "readable form" for me. 11.6 =11'6" (which I know to be 11.5 in decimal)
Hopefully I'm explaining that properly
11.6/12=.967

That should represent 10". And now that you mention it, that IS a flaw in the formula. The .1 should represent 10" not 1". Thats a bummer. I usually type like below. I didn't realize I hadn't in the above snip, sry.
Now I have to figure out that solution. lol Good thing I haven't use this for anything to serious yet Ida been 9" off here and there:rolleyes:

How about
Fluff.xlsm
ABC
1
211.0611'-06"11.5
311.1111'-11"11.91667
411.0311'-03"11.25
511.0911'-09"11.75

Cell Formulas
RangeFormula
B2:B5B2=SUBSTITUTE(A2,".","'-")&""""
C2:C5C2=DOLLARDE(A2,12)
That works! Converts if I use inches too. Thanks so much.
...now how do I solve the 10" representation though. The DOLLARDE formula excepts it as such.
Do I need to start a new thread? Im terrible at this....

Just a question.
Do you get these figures from measuring yourself or from drawings?
You might not be aware that there are so called engineering tapes that have feet in tenth instead of 12 inches per foot.
Makes adding/subtracting so much easier.

Loaded question. I get them from both but in two forms meaning im getting the information in 4 ways. 2 of ways are reading prints (architectural (0' 0") and civil (grade points 000.00) 2 other ways are taken by me physically measuring and inputting data with tape measures and grade lasers.

Not quite sure what you mean by this. As long as anything less than 10 inches is enter like 0.01 then everything should be ok.
