i know you can double click on the "plus sign" visible on the edge of the cell box to fill down - but is there a keyboard shortcut key?

Not sure what you mean. If you select multi cells and enter a value in the 1st cell AND use CTRL+SHIFT+ENTER that value will be placed in all of the selected cells.
