How to create a cell-sized chart?
Tiny charts, called Sparklines, were added to Excel 2010. Look for Sparklines on the Insert tab.
There are many "Filter Highlight" code out there. If you read the comments from the link you posted, you will see the below.

I recently added a sample to my site that colours the heading cells for filtered coloumns, and overcomes the problem of lingering colour, after Show All is selected, or the AutoFilter turned off:
