I have workbook with 3 different sheets that are I'm using as check registers. I want to create a sheet that will tally the running balances across of each of those sheets. So the question is: How do I reference the last number in a column?

Thanks

Excel Facts

Copy a format multiple times
Select a formatted range. Double-click the Format Painter (left side of Home tab). You can paste formatting multiple times. Esc to stop
If you are just trying to show a running balance or the total of the checks written, there's an easier way than finding the last row. It involves Lists, Names and vlookup, so it might be easiest if you could post a sample of your data.

That's only marginally more complicated (you must use specified ranges though, no whole col refs like A:A):

=LOOKUP(2,1/(A2:A1000>0),A2:A1000)

Thanks Richard.. Question: How does the 2,1 work in the LOOKUP formula? Actually I am referencing Column U in my spreadsheet...

The (A2:A1000>0) produces an array (list) of True or Falses. 1/True = 1 but 1/False = Error (ie a DIV0! as FALSE is equivalent to 0). So you end up with a list of 1s and error values. The 2 gets looked up against this list and returns the last valid number 9which is a 1 - the errors are ignored). The value in the corresponding lookup range (also A2:A1000) is then returned.

Make sense?
