# finding certain letters and returning a value

#### happyman123uk

##### Board Regular
I have a spread sheet which I am working on and want to be able to say if a certain letter is entered into a cell it returns a certain value

W=3 points
D=1 point
L=0 points

so if

a1=W
a2=L
a3=W
a4=D
a5=W
a6=L
a7=W
a8=W

a9 would contain the answer which should be 16

### Excel Facts

Whats the difference between CONCAT and CONCATENATE?
The newer CONCAT function can reference a range of cells. =CONCATENATE(A1,A2,A3,A4,A5) becomes =CONCAT(A1:A5)

Hi,

Try:

#### Joe4

Try:
Code:
``=(COUNTIF(A1:A8,"W")*3)+COUNTIF(A1:A8,"D")``
