I am attempting to automate the process of downloading current 401k and IRA data from various websites, however, without knowing the names of the fields I need to populate or the buttons I need to "click", I cannot automate it. What methods are there for determining the field names of webpages?

Excel Facts

Return population for a City
If you have a list of cities in A2:A100, use Data, Geography. Then =A2.Population and copy down.
Look at the HTML source code (View Source in your browser) to determine the HTML element names or ids and HTML DOM structure, or 'dump' the HTMLDocument. All collection.

OK, I am not sure if I am just not able to get the full meaning of the links and advice that have been given me here, or if the particular advice given just doesn't apply to the specific websites that I am trying to access, but I have been relatively unsuccessful so far. The websites I am trying to access are financial websites, so that may be part of the problem. It also complicates how much you can help me because I obviously can't let you log in to see the exact structure of the account pages. Anyway, I will post the financial institutions that I am trying to access, and what my issues are with each site.

Morganstanley.com
  • I CAN log in to my account via vba
  • I CAN navigate to the information that I want
  • I CAN'T copy nor paste any of the information that I want into Excel
  • I CAN'T set up a web query...will not connect tot he pertinent information
Troweprice.com
  • I CAN'T log in tot he site...I cannot find the names of the correct fields
  • I CAN'T set up a web query...will not connect tot he pertinent information
fidelity.com
  • I CAN log in to the site
  • I CAN'T Navigate to the correct information because I cannot find the names of the fields used for navigation
  • I CAN'T set up a web query...will not connect tot he pertinent information
americanfunds.com
  • I CAN set up a web query that gets me the exact information that I want...no problems with this site
Again, thank you for any help.
