Finding The Maximum Ahead

I have a list of numbers as follows:

What I want to do is for each row that has a 1 in, I want to have a second column that shows the highest number reached before the next "1". For example, for the first 1 in the list, I would put 3, for the next 1, 1, for the last 1, I would put a 5. If ocolumn A is not a 1, then column B would be blank.

I have many thousands of rows, and would like to avoid any formula that has to search the entire list. The maximum that the count can go to is 10.

Can anyone help?

The blue bit, together with your general description and sample data, indicates to me that the numbers increase sequentially from 1 to a maximum of 10 before starting again from 1.

If that is correct, and given your desire to not search the whole column of thosands of rows, I think this should suffice.

Choose depending on your version of Excel. Note, though, that the 2003- version will actually work on all versions.
