first column of a range name?

Is there an easy way to obtain the # of the column that a Range Name starts in?

Here's a formula:

=COLUMN(INDEX(rangename,,1))

Thanks for this... I'd actually like to use vba -- could you supply a vba solution?

On opening a book I want to check the column location of certain range names.
