Form Field to Match List

I have a form field for Item Number that I want it to do a validation check against the item number table. I do not want it to be a drop-down b/c there are almost 700 items on this list. Is there a way to link the form field to do a validation check against that field but it still be a free-form field?

in the textbox afterupdate event (or put a button)

if not isnull(Dlookup("[Item]", "table","[item]='" & txtBox & "'") then msgbox "Valid"

I see the logic, and I used the Dlookup in something else (This sparked an idea, thanks). But I'm having trouble with the if not isnull part. I think I need to play with it b/c I'm sure it's user error.
