Formatting for Race Times

I organize an online league for a Formula 1 racing game, and need to format a column to accept race times. I can format the first cell as mm:ss.000, but I can't figure out how to handle position 2 and onward. An example of how I want them to look is:

1.44.917
+0:04.333
+0:06.129
+0:39.037
+0.56.109
+1.14.098
+1 LAP
+1 LAP
+1 LAP
+2 LAPS
+2 LAPS
etc

Format the cells as +[h]:mm:ss.000

That works for the + times, but it won't let me have a + for "+1 LAP"
