If a cell is unlocked, but the sheet protected, the contents of the cell can be altered, but all formatting commands are not available ? is there a way around this, so that formatting (cell colouring) can be achieved ?

Excel Facts

Save Often
If you start asking yourself if now is a good time to save your Excel workbook, the answer is Yes
When you protect your sheet tick the format boxes to enable it after it is protected.

or if the protection is done via VB
ActiveSheet.Protect DrawingObjects:=True, Contents:=True, Scenarios:=True _
, AllowFormattingCells:=True, AllowFormattingColumns:=True, _
AllowFormattingRows:=True

Hope that helps

try to protect it via VB then. In Excell 2003 you have an option when protecting a sheet to allow formating
