Formula displaying - not result

Running Excel 2007 on XP. Creating any type of formula - simple or complex -some cells display the result of the formula, others display the formula. I do not have "show formula" enabled under options.
When I evaluate the formula it says "the cell currently being evaluated contains a constant". Saw this problem a few yrs ago when our documents were used on both PC & Mac platforms. Now we are running only PCs.

I create a new document - all's fine and then I go to edit a formula & it stops displaying the result.

would appreciate any help/ideas of what is going on!
thank you!!
Terri

Excel Facts

Select all contiguous cells
Pressing Ctrl+* (asterisk) will select the "current region" - all contiguous cells in all directions.
Make sure that the cells are formatted as General then re-enter the formula.
