Hi,
I have four cells with numbers in them. I need to figure out how to subtract those numbers from a number in another cell (in another column) and put the results in four other cells:

Cell A1 has the number 1000.

Cells B3-B6 have four different numbers in them. I need to subtract each number from the one in A1 and put the results in cells B8-B11.

Can anyone help??

Many Thanks!!

You can teach Excel a new custom list. Type the list in cells, File, Options, Advanced, Edit Custom Lists, Import, OK

In B8, simply enter the formula:

=A1-B3

and so on for the other formulas.

Tip:

As you are entering =A1-B3 in B8, press F4 while the cursor is between the A1 and the minus sign, then enter -B3

Your formula will now look like =$A$1-B3

After you enter it, re-select cell B8, then grab the lower right corner of the cell and drag this down to where you want to end (B11 in this case).

For this four cell exercise, this doesn't save much time, but you certainly don't want to manually enter the formula if you have 100 cells.

The difference between A1 and $A$1 is that if you copy =A1-B3 to cells below by dragging the lower right corner, you will get A2-B4, A3-B5, etc. However, you want to keep the "A1" portion of your formula unchanged, but allow the Bs to increment. $A$1 is referred to as an absolute cell reference, and in this case keeps the "A1" portion of the formula unchanged as it is copied to other cells: A1-B4, A1-B5, etc.
