I have a list that contains duplicates. I'm looking for a formula that I can fill down that will assign a number to each occurance of that value. For example, If in ColA rows1 to 3 I had the date 1/1/2011 and in row4 I had 1/2/2011 . I want a formula for ColB that would return a value for row1 = 1, row2 = 2, row3 = 3, row4 = 1.

In other words the formula would keep a count of how many times each value has occured in the list thus far. Hope i make sense.

Thank you.

Excel Facts

What do {} around a formula in the formula bar mean?
{Formula} means the formula was entered using Ctrl+Shift+Enter signifying an old-style array formula.
In B1 and copy down,

=countif(A$1:A1, A1)
