I have searched everywhere . My formula doesnt work

John F Kennedy - JohnF
Ben Mango-BenM
Siya Ginger Kolisi - SiyaK

I want to combine the first name plus the last initial. It must ignore the middle name

Excel Facts

Links? Where??
If Excel says you have links but you can't find them, go to Formulas, Name Manager. Look for old links to dead workbooks & delete.
What about people with multipart surnames, like Van Deeson, or with ordinals after name like John Brown III, or with Jr or Sr after name. There are so many variations and permutations of how a name may exist, I doubt you will get a formula to do what you want and cope with such possibilities.

Then use this formula:
=LEFT(A2,FIND(" ",A2)-1)&LEFT(TRIM(RIGHT(SUBSTITUTE(TRIM(A2)," ",REPT(" ",100)),100)),1)
