Formula to Extract number from Data

I have the month and year in cell D5 for Eg Oct 2010. If one clicks on cell D5, Oct 2010 appears as 01/10/2010 in the formula bar

Oct is the first month of our financial year. I would like a formula in D12, that will extract Oct as 1, Nov as 2, Dec as 3 etc

I tried to use the Mid Function, but could not get the desired result

=MONTH(EDATE(D5,3))

=MOD(MONTH(D5)+2,12)+1
