I have a GETPIVOTDATA formula that I need to return the text in a a cell. I can get it to return a number, but not text. Here's the formula I'm using:

=GETPIVOTDATA("12-36 Months Cost",PivotTable!A3:H23,"Group",Formula!B3,"Status",Formula!B6,"Plan",Formula!B9,"Bracket",Formula!B12,"Level",Formula!B15)

This same formula will return the value if it's a number, but not if it's text, i.e., "Group2".

I can upload the workbook if needed. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Wildcard in VLOOKUP
Use =VLOOKUP("Apple*" to find apple, Apple, or applesauce
I don't see how a GETPIVOTDATA can ever return text ... you pass it fields etc, and it returns the number that is the result in the PivotTable, i.e. a number.

This is straight off of Microsoft's website for the GETPIVOTDATA function for Excel 2007, but I could be understanding this the wrong way:

"If the field and item arguments describe a single cell, the value of that cell is returned regardless of whether it is a string, number, error, and so on."

The arguments describe a single cell, and the value in that cell is a string. It seems like it should work, no?

Okay, well, I just assigned each of the different groups a number value, and then made a separate table, and then used a vlookup formula using the number value for the answer. I'm sure it's not the most conventional route but it works.

Thanks!
