If you are using 2007 then you can not use USC as a named range because it is a column.

I'm sorry but I was wrong on this. I should have said you can't use something like USC1 since it is a column/cell.

When you enter the named range it should be:
Name: USC
Refer to: ="Southern Cal"

This works for me. Does this help?

i want excel to recognize that when a cell is =southern california, it is also equal to USC
