i have a dump of a bunch of trial balances in excel at the moment.
there's 3 different 'companies' (well all within the head office umbrella) each w/ the same accounts for the most part, dividided up into 2009 and 2010.

eg:
Main, 11120, 2009, $65
Main, 11120, 2010, $400
Construction, 11120, 2009, $31
Construction, 11140, 2009, $40
Construction, 11120, 2010, $375
Construction, 11140, 2010, $375
Advertising blah blah

As you can see the account numbers (11120, 11140 etc) are similar but not always the same. If Main has that acct#, Construction may or may not have it, but if it does it would refer to the same thing (bank balance).

This spreadsheet is a few hundred lines long. I want to be able to summarize it at will.

I'd like to be able to choose the acct# on the left, and it shows me all the companies (Main, Construction, Mktg) that have it, along w/ the totals. I'd also like to be able to choose the year on the top so that if I want to see just the 2009 totals, or 2010 or both, I have that option.

Can anyone help? Thanks!

Excel Facts

Format cells as currency
Select range and press Ctrl+Shift+4 to format cells as currency. (Shift 4 is the $ sign).
When you create your pivot table put the acct # and the year at the very top in the report filter/page then put whatever you want in the columns, rows, and values.

Then just select what you want in the drop down.
