Hi - i'm trying to write what i believe to be a simple statement, but can't work out why I'm getting an error

IF(I2<TODAY() and U2<>"Complete", "True", "False")

If the value in I2 is before today's date AND the value in U2 is not equal to Complete, return true
if not false

Excel Facts

Square and cube roots
The =SQRT(25) is a square root. For a cube root, use =125^(1/3). For a fourth root, use =625^(1/4).
Excel Formula:
=IF(AND(I2<TODAY(), U2<>"Complete"), "True", "False")

FWIW you could also get rid of the IF & leave the values as logical values rather than text
Excel Formula:
=AND(I2<TODAY(), U2<>"Complete")
