Hi everyone,

Please help with calculated fields. I have a pivot table in which I have selected calculated fields. The insert calculated field dialog pops up. However, when I type a name and a formula, I get the following message:

"An item cannot be found. Check that you've typed the name correctly and the item is present in the Pivot Table report."

Of course the item isn't present--I am trying to add the field!

Yuck--please help.

Thank you,

Can you AutoAverage in Excel?
There is a drop-down next to the AutoSum symbol. Open the drop-down to choose AVERAGE, COUNT, MAX, or MIN
hi there and welcome to the board!

you will need to add the field that is part of your formula to the pivot table. redo your pivot and bring in the missing field - once you do this you should have no problem inserting a calculated field.

Hi mdeblois1:

Welcome to MrExcel Board!

The calculate field has to be built using fields from within the Pivot Table -- following is a simple example ...
y040107h1.xls
ABCDEFGHI
1itemQtyunitCostSumofextCost
2156itemQtyunitCostTotal
324615630
433624624
542633618
642612
7GrandTotal336
8
Sheet3

The source data has fields for Item, Qty, and unitCost. In the PivotTable, I have used a calulated field

extCost = Qty*unitCost

Please note that my calculated field extCost is only using fields that already exist in the PivotTable. I hope this helps.
