How can I fill down a column without adjacent columns?

Is there any way to copy a formula down a column which has empty columns next to it? That is, I can’t copy the formula down with a double click in this situation. Instead of dragging down the Fill Handle (say down to 1870th row!!), I usually create a column next to this column which I will be working on beforehand so that I can do the simple ‘double click’ cool act. However, I think there should be better alternatives and I would appreciate any suggestions. Thanks.

You can go to a cell and extend ... e.g. if you are in cell M2 and you want to fill down to M1870, then do Goto ( F5 ) M1870 and hold Shift down whilst pressing Enter, and you'll have M2:M1870 selected. Press Ctrl-D to fill down.

If the range is a fixed length, I sometimes put a row of "x"s just below the final row. This way I can use the Ctrl + Shift + Down Arrow to select the entire column down to that row. It's not ideal, but is helpful if you lack other options.
