How do I break a link from a file that is not there?

How do I break a link from a file that is not there?
Here is what I have done I have move some file to one folder.
When I open the file I get the error update links. I do that, and there are some file I can not update.
It said error source not found .but when I try to break the link it says the file is protected. All the file are unprotected and every thing is work like it should. You Guys Are Awesome I know one of you has the answer Thanks
