How to automate barcode population

Good evening everyone. I rarely use excel and I (think) what I'm looking for is a formula. What I want to accomplish is to type a alphanumeric data (with periods) in A1 and automatically populate A2 with a 3 of 9 barcode (this barcode requires an asterisk at the beginning and end as a start stop function. If you all will be gracious enough to help me with this, I will attempt to move this to MS Publisher 2010 where I am generating labels.
