how to customize markers?

I want to customize the markers available to me in Excel 2003. Format data series/marker pane on right. There are only 9 options to choose from, and 3 are the same (a large square). Is there a way to "make your own"?

I have a scatter chart with x-axis dates (each chart spans a month, each day showing (eg March shows 1-31 days). I want to create a single vertical line to show a financial period close. I think I can do it with your info, but it will be intensive. Is there a simplier way? The period end changes by month, so I will have to insert the date each month I create the chart.
