I am trying to automatically update the past 20 working days of data from an excel source CSV workbook into a target worksheet using the external data procedure but I am in the dark on how to get this done. Can someone kindly give a detailed procedure on how to do this?

The source workbook is updated in real time while it is closed but cannot be updated/written to if it is open. When I go to the source workbooks file location I can view the actual file only if I click on the view compatibility files option in windows 7, but if I try to browse to the source workbooks file location using the browse function the file is not visible at all.

What can I do to accomplish my task?

thanks and regards.

Excel Facts

Excel motto
Not everything I do at work revolves around Excel. Only the fun parts.
I don't know if the viewers of my thread understood the scenario as nobody has posted any questions for clarifications.

I am basically trying to update a target worksheet with the past 20 days of data from a source workbook.

I also tried to follow the procedures using the website http://www.nickhodge.co.uk/pre2007/gui/datamenu/importexternal.htm but got an error in excel 2007 that this file contains no data tables.

can anybody help in this? it is urgent and i need all the help that i can get.

regards.

I was just able to import data when i click in excel data>get external data>text files and went through the screens and it imported ALL the data from a copy of the same workbook (but in static format) stored on my desktop, however when I try to import by browsing to the directory that contains the original workbook (but which is updated with the latest information) the file is not visible.

In order for me to view the workbook with the latest updated data in the directory I have to go to c>programfiles etc and click on the compatibility files option then the updated file becomes visible, if i do not do this then the folder has the message this folder is empty, and this compatibility files option is not visible to me when i try to browse to the program files directory as described above.

The other thing is that I want to automatically import/refresh only the last 20 days of data and not the entire data set which goes back many years.

This is driving me nuts.

An update : The solution on http://support.microsoft.com/kb/927387/en-us for scenario #2 solved my problem with finding the correct directory and now I am able to import the data however ALL data is being imported which is not needed.

I am requesting assistance on how to fix this and import only the last 20 days starting from the last line of data and going back 20 days in the past.

Can someone suggest a method to do this automatically when I just click on refresh connection?

thanks and regards,
deuce.

hi, they are all sales data set numbers i cannot post those but here is an example close to what i am trying to do.

You may be able to create a grid of 7 columns and the latest 960 rows add 7 blank columns then repeat the same thing for another dataset 7 blank columns and another dataset then 7 blank columns etc etc.

What I want to accomplish is to only hold the latest 960 rows for each dataset that whenever a new row is added the 961'st row for each data set(at the top row) will be deleted from the target workbook.

The 2 most important fields are the first one which is the date, and time of which the time is in 30 minute intervals.

Here are 10 records which are somewhat similar to my original data set.

I construe the task as retrieving the last N (in your situation: 20) records to a different sheet...

Let A:G on Sheet1 house the sample, occupying A42:G51 area within those columns.

Sheet2 (the destination sheet)

hi thanks for your response, can it be done to retrieve only the last N rows into the target workbook from the source workbook?

The source workbook contains 160,000 rows for every dataset and there are like 9 different sets.

i am trying to keep only the relevant data in the target workbook.

kind regards,
deuce.
