I created a macro that checks before closing if some "needed" cells are filled in. If so then the file saves and closes. But if not then a messagebox appears but the file will close (or ask if I want to save changes). How can I end the macro without closing the file?

Thanks.

Do you hate GETPIVOTDATA?
Prevent GETPIVOTDATA. Select inside a PivotTable. In the Analyze tab of the ribbon, open the dropown next to Options and turn it off
Just use an If Then statement, and set Cancel to True if your condition(s) is not met. As a simple example, this will stop the workbook from being closed unless there's a '1' in cell A1 on Sheet 1: -

Private Sub Workbook_BeforeClose(Cancel As Boolean)

If Sheet1.Range("A1") <> 1 Then
Cancel = True
MsgBox "Type in 1 in cell A1"
Exit Sub
Else:
ThisWorkbook.Save
End If

End Sub
