How would I count cells that contain multiple items

I would like to know how I could perform the following.

Ex. Cell A1-A3 contains: Tom, Dad, Pam
1,2,3
Paul, Dad, dog

how would I count just the cells that contain the name Dad for example.

Use COUNTIF with wildcards:

=COUNTIF(A1:A3,"*Dad*")
