Another program that I use has added an shortcut to the Tools menu that starts that add-in. Is there a way within a macro to simulate that menu item being clicked so that my code automatically starts that add-in?
No need to "simulate that menu item being clicked".
Just include the code the shortcut uses in your code.
Without seeing any of your code, it is hard to direct you anymore than that.
Right mouse over a toolbar and select customize, select the Commands tab, in categories select Macros, right click your shortcut icon, click "Assign Macro...", choose Edit.
You should now be able to see the code the shortcut uses.
