i am after some help with the if function

i have a column which has numbers and text

so it could have £10

or some have £50cr and the cell is formated as text

i would like to do a if statement so that if column a has a number in it i copies the number if it is text to copy the number lose the cr and make it a negitive value so the £50cr would become -£50
