IF + SUMIF help please

Hi, I have a list of data that shows clients who may or may not be in a group. If not in a group the group column shows blank. Each client has a total and I am looking for a formula to calculate each groups total (which I have as =IF(D2=D1,””,SUMIF(D:D,D2,E:E)) which calculates the groups, but the blank group totals are coming up as zero as it is grouping all the blanks together as one. I need it to show the blanks as the singular amount. Can anyone help please?

=IF(D2="",E2,IF(D2=D1,"",SUMIF(D:D,D2,E:E)))

Would you mind sharing some sanitized sample data. If the group is blank, you could maybe refer to the cliënt number of name.
