IFERROR Formula - problem

Hi
I am having a problem using this IFERROR formula. I keep getting the pop-up

"Youve entered too many arguments for this function".



=IFERROR(INDEX(Data!$C$7:$AL$51,MATCH(Dashboard!$C$6,Data!$B$7:$B$51,0),MATCH(Dashboard!D18,Data!$C$6:$AL$6,0),MATCH($C$3,Data!$A$5:$A$51,0),"-",(INDEX(Data!$C$7:$AL$51,MATCH(Dashboard!$C$6,Data!$B$7:$B$51,0),MATCH(Dashboard!D18,Data!$C$6:$AL$6,0),MATCH($C$3,Data!$A$5:$A$51,0))

I cant get it to work in my worksheet. can anyone shed some light as to why this IFERROR is not working, too many brackets, not enough, too many commas, not enough???????

Excel Facts

Well, for one thing, you have too many MATCH functions within the INDEX function.

Here's the syntax for a typical INDEX function

INDEX(range , "look in this row" , "look in this column")
INDEX(range , MATCH(...) , MATCH(...))

You have:

INDEX(range , MATCH(...) , MATCH(...) , MATCH(...))

Can you provide an explanation of what you're trying to do with this.

You have in fact:

=INDEX(Data!$C$7:$AL$51,MATCH(Dashboard!$C$6,Data!$B$7:$B$51,0),MATCH(Dashboard!D18,Data!$C$6:$AL$6,0),MATCH($C$3,Data!$A$5:$A$51,0))

Does this work at all as intended? If it does, IFERROR around this would give:

=IFERROR(INDEX(Data!$C$7:$AL$51,MATCH(Dashboard!$C$6,Data!$B$7:$B$51,0),MATCH(Dashboard!D18,Data!$C$6:$AL$6,0),MATCH($C$3,Data!$A$5:$A$51,0)),"-")

I believe you are trying to use the last MATCH bit as "area_num" within INDEX...

By the way, if

Dashboard!$C$6 is a value like sp58;

Dashboard!D18 is a value like Nov-11; and

C3 is a value like Weather Balloons [ Is this cell not on Dashboard? ]

then a formula like, as formulated in an earlier thread of yours,...

=INDEX(Data!$C$5:$AL$51,MATCH(Dashboard!$C$6,IF(ROW(Data!$A$5:$A$51)-ROW(Data!$A$5)+1>=MATCH($C$3,Data!$A$5:$A$51,0),Data!$B$5:$B$51,"#"),0),MATCH(Dashboard!$D$18,Data!$C$6:$AL$6,0))

which must be confirmed with control+shift+enter, not just enter, would fit your data.

You can also wrap the latter with IFERROR...

=IFERROR(INDEX(Data!$C$5:$AL$51,MATCH(Dashboard!$C$6,IF(ROW(Data!$A$5:$A$51)-ROW(Data!$A$5)+1>=MATCH($C$3,Data!$A$5:$A$51,0),Data!$B$5:$B$51,"#"),0),MATCH(Dashboard!$D$18,Data!$C$6:$AL$6,0)),"")

Is there a function in Excel 2007 that can convert the result of another formula into its intended value.
I am using an EDATE function in a cell, which is

=EDATE(A1,-1)

Thus,
A B C

May-11 =EDATE(A1,1) returns Feb-11

However, I would like to convert the result in column B to a value rather than a formula, at the moment my index match formula isnt working because it references B above which has a formula in it. I need to convert that formula to a value.

If A1 houses

1-May-11

=EDATE(A1,1)

will yield

1-Jun-11

You can format the date cells (including the formula cells) as

mmm-yy

for display purposes.

As long as you have a first day date in A1 like

1-May-11

you can also invoke:

=DATE(YEAR(A1),MONTH(A1)+1,1)

May I ask you why you insist on that Index formula with 3 Match expressions for I have the impression that your data does not fit the reuirements?

What follows is an example with INDEX having an area term...

we can have in G2 something like:

which uses the area notion.

I am trying to continue using the Index + 3 Match function because it was working fine, referencing 3 different values and returning the correct value. The problem was when i started fiddling with IFERROR which was because I was getting #N/A if there was no data in a given month, thats when i started having problems.
To be honest, your suggestions didnt make sense to me, I didnt know how to construct them in my workbook. Would it be possible for me to send you my file so you can have a look for me please?

I am experiencing the same issue using IFERROR with Index and 2 MATCHES to avoid N/As. I found a great way to use INDEX/MATCH as a matrix lookup
= INDEX ( array , MATCH ( lookup_value , lookup_array , 0 ) , MATCH ( lookup_value , lookup_array , 0 ) ) but run into the same issues as the question in this post. Is there a simple way around?

It must be the magic of asking the question :) I tried again putting an iferror around the index/match and it works - there are no longer n/as , just "failed" where the iferror didn't match up.
