ignoring blanks while preforming calculation

Hi :)
I'm stuck - I need a function that sums up a simple calculation. I'm using SUM and also tried SUMIF, however it still gives me #value!
=SUM((B22*B23);(B27*B28);(B32*B33);(B37*B38)) it works perfect if all the required cells have a number, however if one of the cell is blank it doesn't return the correct calculation ignoring the blank.

Wildcard in VLOOKUP
Use =VLOOKUP("Apple*" to find apple, Apple, or applesauce
I know there has to be a more elegant way to do this, but try:

=SUM(N(B22)*N(B23);N(B27)*N(B28);N(B32)*N(B33);N(B37)*N(B38))
