Insert date if text entered into cell above

Thank you in advance for any help you can lend. I would like to have the current date entered into cell A2 if there is any data entered into cell A1. I would then want that date to stay the same. I cannot use macros. Thanks

The only way to do that without macros is to click in A2 and press CTRL + ;
