If I have a scalar, then is there a function I can call (or write) to determine if it is a string or a number.

for example a string I would parse, but an integer I would use in a statistical test.

Can anyone offer a solution ?

Of course, you're correct. I came across this thread while looking for an answer to my own issue, and answered incorrectly based upon my misinterpretation of Microsoft's explanation of the Val() function. Coincidentally, my own application issue is still unresolved, and your explanation of the use of Val() in this instance helps me to better understand why!

I believe the code as shown in this thread that works for the OP will work for me instead of Val(). Thanks for the lesson!
