my original file was 8mb and included various calculations including VLOOKUP.

i decided to use INDEX/INDIRECT in lieu of VLOOKUP - the size of this file is now 7mb. however, the smaller file takes much longer to save data and make changes. why would this be?

thanks.

Excel Facts

VLOOKUP to Left?
Use =VLOOKUP(A2,CHOOSE({1,2},$Z$1:$Z$99,$Y$1:$Y$99),2,False) to lookup Y values to left of Z values.
mcarter973,

The functions INDEX & MATCH is in general faster then LOOKUP-function and therefore the time for saving / calculate should be less.

However, the INDIRECT-function is not the fastest function but can be difficult to be replaced...

Take a look on Charles Williams excellent site for further discussions:

Kind regards,
Dennis
