Linked workbooks won't save as different names

I have two work books that have a number of links between them. I am able to save both workbooks without problems. However, if I change the name of the workbooks they won't save if both are open at the same time. Excel just thinks and thinks....

If I open one workbook without the other workbook open I can save the workbook with a new name, but then my links need to be changed. If I go to edit links and change the source I get the same problem as when I try to save the workbooks with a different name when they are both open. Excel just thinks and thinks....

Any ideas on how I can change the names of my workbooks and maintain the links?

Format cells as date
Select range and press Ctrl+Shift+3 to format cells as date. (Shift 3 is the # sign which sort of looks like a small calendar).
Yes, ther are links heading in both directions if that's what you mean by bi directional. Also, it's not just links, the majority of the information is actually index/match formulas.

I have used bidirectional links and have not had a problem saving the workbooks with new names. If Excel doesn't like it, maybe it's time for a rethink.
