Can anyone tell me if there is a way to link to cells in another spreadsheet without having to open that spreadsheet up each time.

For example if I have two spreadsheet files (FILE1.XLS and FILE2.XLS), and I have a VLOOKUP command in FILE2.XLS that points to cells within FILE1.XLS - do I always have to open FILE1.XLS first to be able to read the contents.

=VLOOKUP(C6,[FILE1.xls]Sheet1!$B$3:$C$6,2,FALSE)

It's a pain to keep having to open the FILE1.XLS first before the formula will work in FILE2.XLS

Thanks

Does the VLOOKUP table have to be sorted?
No! when you are using an exact match, the VLOOKUP table can be in any order. Best-selling items at the top is actually the best.
VLOOKUP should suffice entirely....

let me find a similar question raised today.... brb

check out the above thread ( maybe you guys work in the same place ?!)

Keep an eye on his problem too as it may solve yours..... at the very least, I'd recommend you message or email him so he can keep you posted and visa versa...

Is there any way then to stop Excel asking about "This sheet contains links to other workbooks" and just have it update anyway.
